(RE)CREATION

Welcome to my website! My name is Shellene Ramsahoye, and this site is all about re-creation - of myself and my lifestyle. Creating and shaping that next phase of life after 50, when so many other milestones have been achieved. More re-creation and recreation!

I live in Wainwright, a rural town in east-central Alberta, Canada. I live on an acreage outside of town, which offers incredible inspiration for what I love to do - photography, writing, gardening, and just being out in nature. My husband is a rural physician, working mostly in the emergency department and as a General Practice Anaesthetist. I have two older teenage kids, whose interests and pursuits are as broad as my own. As a family, we love to travel whenever we get the chance.

I grew up in Wainwright, so my family roots are here. I completed my Bachelor of Science in Specialization Zoology from the University of Alberta in 1990. I was going to save the planet! But post-degree jobs often lead you down a different road. After working as a research assistant in Psychiatry at the U of A Hospital, I decided to apply for my Master of Speech-Language Pathology. The graduate program was a great place for me to meld together my diverse skills set and experience. I graduated in 1995, and took my first job in Duncan, BC. My husband (fiancé at the time), matched his rural residency program through the University of Victoria, so off we moved to Vancouver Island. During the second year of his residency we worked in the Burns Lake/Vanderhoof area of BC (west of Prince George). I established a early intervention/preschool SLP program, working with multidisciplinary team members, to serve that amazing geographical region. After an incredible 18-month experience in the more northerly parts of BC, we decided it was time to move home to Alberta.

So for the last 25 years, I have been a rural practice Speech-Language Pathologist, working in this large geographic area covering all types of clients, with every type of communication difficulty you can imagine. During the past 15 years, my private practice focussed on severely communication-challenged preschoolers, offering services within structured school settings. Recently, I have been winding down my practice, feeling that I need to shake things up and devote more time to other things I have always enjoyed. My exploration of the parts of me that I have set aside to build my family and career are the experiences you will find on this site. I would like to share my journey and discoveries about redefining yourself after 50!
